The current Roman Martyrology has moved the feast of Lazarus to July 29 a day to share with his sisters: Martha and Mary of Bethany. Saint Lazarus has some hymns that are usually sung or chanted during his feast day on March 17th and again on Lazarus Saturday, which takes place the day before Palm Sunday on Holy Week. Because of this event, what we now refer to as the “Raising of Lazarus”, many people came to believe that Jesus was the Messiah. Still wrapped in his bandages, he emerged from the tomb. Once they were, he told Lazarus to come forward. When Jesus arrived at Lazarus’s tomb, he ordered that the stones be rolled away. Lazarus had passed away four days prior and was already buried in his tomb. Martha and Mary sent word to Jesus that his friend was sick, and when Jesus arrived, it looked as if he was too late. While Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, Lazarus became very ill. Jesus had a close relationship with Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. He has two sisters named Mary and Martha, and they were also mentioned in the gospels. In the Gospel of John, we know that he came from a town named Bethany, which was outside of Jerusalem. Much of Lazarus’s story is chronicled in the New Testament.
